Large Woven Yam Mask

Mid-20th century Papua New Guinea Yam Mask. Yes, it is a mask for a vegetables.  Also an important cultural symbol. A striking hand-woven vegetal fiber mask of tall form, painted in vivid hues of russet, ochre, white, dark brown, and cobalt blue. Encircled by a zigzagging border of twisted fiber, it features a central nasal bridge flanked by two circular eyes, surrounded by openwork ovals and a pair of petite conical ears. Light fraying and very minor damage at the top of the nasal bridge. Clearly, one of the best we've seen.  Measures 21.75 inches high by 14 inches in diameter.
